My son Nicholas Mathus AKA Nick the History Kid was a young patriot who loved history. Since 2010 Nick and I have been making short videos promoting New Jersey's Historical Buildings and sites. Nick's sports took us around the country and used that opportunity to make local historical videos for people of all ages. Our historical buildings cannot be replaced and must be preserved for future generations to come. Nick has over 112 videos in various locations from Detroit, Michigan to Key West, Florida but mainly focuses on New Jersey's rich history. Nick's web page was linked to New Jersey Travel and Tourism and associated with Mount Vernon in Virginia, Johns Hopkins "Talented Youth" Programs, the Paterson Museum in Paterson N.J. and the Adventure Aquarium in Camden, New Jersey. History is fun especially through the eyes of a young Patriot. Historical tourism is a great family activity that more Americans should visit, enjoy and support. Nick was attending the University of North Carolina in Pembroke. Nick was active in student Government at UNCP and loved his responsibilities.

January 26th, 2019 / MORRIS COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP SWIM MEET
After only 2 weeks of practice Nick competed in the 2019 Morris County Swimming Championship meet held at Morristown High School. Nick was the only non-club swimmer to compete in 4 events. Delbarton won six of 11 events to win back to back championships. Delbarton finished with a score of 195 .Randolph came in second with 140. Nick's participation in 3 relays coming in first in the Medley relay with a time of 1:50.78. Nick came in second, after his teammate, in the 50 freestyle giving Delbarton a one, two punch and many points. In the 200 free relay Nick led off and gave his team a early lead ultimately coming in second only by .28 seconds. Nick's contribution resulted in the extra points that gave Delbarton first place.
This was the last time my son ever swam competitively and the most exciting meet I ever seen him swim in. I don't think I ever missed any of my son's swim meets or track meets. I enjoyed watching so much and we traveled thousands of miles to many states making historical videos also where ever we visited. I remember when Nick showed me that he was already swimming faster than Johnny Weissmuller (Tarzan) and broke his 1927 Olympic record for the 100 yard freestyle, Nick was only 15 at that time. Nick had that stat mounted on the pantry door for a long time. Little did I know this Morris County swim meet would be his last impressive show of diving, stamina, technique, turning, style and determination. I never saw anyone with a better dive than my son. I watch that video and still cry because I remember how proud I was. No one expected Nick to do that good after taking 2 years off to run for Delbarton. I still cheer him on every time I watch it.
I love you Nicholas Glenn Mathus, my son (POPS)

DELBARTON SENIOR NEWS 2018
Wave in Motion: Latin 5 Orators
Jessica Fiddes
December 7, 2018 5:52 PM
Only the most committed students move on to AP Latin. For senior Latin scholars, the final step is Latin 5.
Thus, this year Classics Department Chairperson Dr. Rachel Carlson has the cream of the crop in her Latin 5 class, three boys who have a deep affinity for the language and could not imagine giving it up in their final year at Delbarton. Meet senior Nick Mathus, Andrew Coffey and Kevin Gilfillan, all proud members of the Class of 2019.
On December 3, the trio faced off in the ultimate Latin contest: emulating the famed Latin orator Cicero as he delivered vehement speeches confronting a conspiracy led by his arch nemesis Lucius Sergius Catllina.
The backstory: Catiline was running for election to Rome's highest office (Consul), gaining support among indebted aristocrats and disgruntled veterans by promising debt relief. He lost the election, and then plotted to kill the two Consuls in office and take over the state. Cicero was one of those two elected Consuls and, learning of the conspiracy, he boldly challenged Catiline publically in the Roman Senate.
After an extraordinarily close vote, Nick Mathus won the day, donned the laurel crown and, later, was presented with a suitably classic Cicero mug.
IT HAS COME TO MY ATTENTION THAT THERE WAS A
"INVITATION ONLY" CELEBRATION OF MY SON'S LIFE HELD AT DELBARTON ABOUT 5 WEEKS AFTER HIS DEATH. COULD IT POSSIBLY BE TRUE THAT THERE WERE 3 SECURITY GUARDS AT THE DOORS TO PREVENT NICK'S GIRLFRIEND, AUNT AND FATHER (with photos TO IDENTIFY us) FROM ENTERING THE AUDITORIUM????? I BELIEVE THIS EVENT ABOUT MY SON'S LIFE ONLY SADDENED OR INFURIATED MY SON IF HE KNEW WE WERE EXCLUDED. I WAS 1,200 MILES AWAY IN FLORIDA AND IF I KNEW ABOUT IT NO 3 MAN SWAT TEAM WOULD HAVE LOCKED FERNANDA AND I OUT. SHAME ON YOU DELBARTON, SHAME ON YOU! |

NICK MATHUS WORSHIPPED WITH US HERE AT THE SPRING HILL CHUCH OF CHRIST WHENEVER HE VISITED HIS FATHER IN WEEKI WACHEE. IT WAS ALSO MY PLEASURE TO HAVE SOME BIBLE STUDIES WITH NICK AND GLENN IN DADS HOUSE. GOD WANTS
US TO BE STUDENTS OF HIS WORD, THE BIBLE. (2 TIMOTHY 2:15) IN OUR STUDIES I WAS ABLE TO SHARE WITH NICK GOD'S PLAN FOR THE CHURCH AND THE PLAN OF SALVATION. WE MUST REMEMBER THAT THE BIBLE CAN GIVE US COMFORT IN TRYING TIMES. IN THE SCRIPTURES, WE FIND THE LIFE OF JOB. HE WAS A WEALTHY MAN, BUT ONE DAY HE LOST EVERYTHING; HIS WEALTH, HIS FAMILY AND HIS HEALTH. BUT JOB NEVER GAVE UP ON GOD. HE DID NOT SIN NOR CHARGE FOOLISHLY (JOB 1;22) THE BIBLE TELLS US THAT WE CAN BE MORE THAN CONQUERS. (ROMANS 8:38-39) THE WORD OF GOD IS CERTAINLY A BOOK OF CONSOLATION. MAY WE ALWAYS TURN TO IT FOR STRENGTH. MIKE MADDEN PREACHER SPRING HILL CHURCH OF CHRIST 5456 DELTONA BLVD SPRING HILL, FL 34606 |

I REALLY DO NOT CARE IF ANYONE BELIEVES ME OR NOT BUT I KNOW WHAT I SAW.
I ONLY TOLD THIS STORY TO SEVERAL FRIENDS AND FAMILY MEMBERS LESS THAN A MONTH AFTER MY SON DIED. I WAS FLOATING IN MY POOL LOOKING AT THE CLOUDS LIKE NICK AND I DID SEVERAL TIMES TRYING TO SEE SHAPES AND IDENTIFY THEM FOR POINTS. I'LL NEVER FORGET THERE WERE CLOUDS AND A CLEAR SPOT COMING OVER ME. THEN I SAW
DAD
WAS CLEARLY VISIBLE DIRECTLY ABOVE ME. I KNEW IT WAS NICK AND THEN THE WORDS
"I'M SO SORRY, IT WAS AN ACCIDENT, I DIDN'T MEAN TO DO IT"
CAME INTO MY HEAD. I KNOW WHAT I SAW. MY SON WAS SORRY FOR LEAVING ME AND CAUSING SO MUCH PAIN.

LIFE IS TOO SHORT
Grudges are a waste of happiness. Laugh when you can.
Apologize when you should. Let go of what you can't change. Love deeply and forgive quickly.
Life is to short to be unhappy. Live and learn before it's to late.
Nick and dad took a little ride to Yankeetown, Florida where Elvis Presley made the 1961 movie "FOLLOW THAT DREAM". Nick is sitting where Elvis sat in the movie. While filming the movie Elvis even attended Florida's second oldest tourist attraction "Weeki Wachee Mermaids" which is only 3 miles from where I live now. Nick and I went there in 2020. |
October 10th, 2010 (Columbus Day); Nick and I took a day trip to Seaside Heights, NJ. Both the water and air temperature were in the 80's. We had a blast. These are days I will always remember.

YES, MY SON WAS THAT FAST... THINK FAST, RUN FAST
I gave my son this wallet back in 2007. Back when Nick was
6 years old he needed a wallet for money he earned from doing chores. This was a pivotal moment in my son's young life. This wallet represents the beginning of my sons earning years. I knew the significance of the moment and wrote inside of it. To my recent surprise my son used it the rest of his life. With a great future ahead of him I wanted Nick to always know I loved him after I died. This wallet is now a reminder to me of a young man with a great future cut short due to bad decisions. My son accomplished so much before he was 15 years old. Nick used the money from this wallet to buy gas to visit me, treat his girlfriend Fernanda to a special evening or buy her a special gift. This wallet represents my son's ability to make people happy. |
I will never forget this day. It's was truly one of the happiest days of my life. Whenever I had a day with both of my children it was truly a gift and this day was

As Nick's father I remember the first time my son got into trouble. Nick was 13 months old and we were in Graceland touring Elvis's Mansion. I was holding Nick and he took his binky from his mouth and threw it on Elvis's couch. Lights went off and a security guard came running out and asked me "Who did that?" and I pointed at Nick. The security guard got on his walkie talkie and reported. "All clear a baby threw his pacifier on the couch". He then got it and gave it back to me. Why I saved it, I don't know? But I'm glad I did.

Disney World 2010 |
Nick and my favorite place in New Jersey was Sandy Hook - Gateway National Recreation Area. We both discovered this beautiful part of the Jersey Shore when we made our first video there. We had our favorite spot where we would throw the football, fish, catch crab or stroll the beach. We even brought our foreign exchange students. This was our special place where we made friends with Ranger Tom who helped us with our videos. |
My son and I started making historical videos when he was about 9 years old. We started making them in New Jersey because we loved our rich history with General George Washington. When Nick was 3 years old I made a home movie of Nick and his sister Amanda at Gettysburg recreating Pickett's charge and Joshua Chamberlain's Bayonet charge on Little Round Top. We did that in one day and Nick actually marched over 2 miles carrying his musket.
For all 122 videos we made both sports and historical I used a Kodak Flip HD video recorder. It developed into a strange looking concoction of equipment including a light, wireless microphone, amplifier and my old cell phone I used as a tele prompter which had to be preloaded before every historical trip. I had all these devices mounted on a monopole and got plenty of stares and inquiries as to was was that.
What made our videos different was the fact that we showed you things and took you places you were not allowed to see on any tour. For example, It took us 4 years to get permission to got into the attic of Morristown's old court house to video the last gallows that were used in the last public hanging in Morristown, NJ back in 1833. In our Charles Lindbergh video we got permission to video in the Lindbergh mansion and the babies nursery. In our Hindenburg video we were allowed to climb 180 feet in hanger #1 and video. My best memory making these videos was in Detroit, Michigan. I would contact prospective project person of authority and ask if we could make a video there because we were coming to the area for my son's sports and I would attach this web page for them to see and see that my son was a true patriot. So MOTOWN invited us to the museum to video. I remember when we got the we had a meeting with the CEO of Motown in the building next door which was once a two family home. We were invited into the dinning room which was now the conference room. Needless to say we felt important and appreciated. The CEO told us that he really appreciated what we were doing to preserve and promote historical tourism. He then pulled out a contract for me to sign that I still have. He said we normally charge $750.00 a hour to film but because we like you so much and what your doing, I have to charge something. I'm charging you $1.00 and that included free admission and MOTOWN shirts. That video was a blast. We even filmed the control room that no one was allowed to film. These memories I will cherish forever.

ABBOTT AND COSTELLO
MEET THE YOUNGSTERS Chris Costello's (Lou's daughter) August 2017 Abbott and Costello Monthly News Letter. This project was truly a joy to produce. Both Nick and I started
our relationship with the Paterson Museum with remembering the great Lou Costello. We even show you the school where Lou first said to his teacher "I'm a bad Boy". |
At age 15 Nick created a tribute to my father with a video titled Lou Costello's Paterson Then and Now. The project the both Nick and his father seven months to finish. A year later they followed up with another video when he and his dad Glenn Mathus attended Lou's 110 birthday celebration at the Paterson Museum.
In 2016 Nick assembled his video tribute to Bud Abbott in Asbury Park, New Jersey where Bud was raised. To date Nick has made over 110 videos and is involved in saving New Jersey's historical buildings, one of which included the Paterson Armory which was destroyed in a fire in 2015. Nick is also a lifeguard at Trump International Golf Club also in New Jersey. If you would like to know more about Nick please visit his web site at www.nickthehistorykid.com. Chris Costello |

A response to a post that Sal put on his Facebook site about Nick the History Kid:
By Bob Mauro a friend of Sal, Nick, myself and History.
"Now I know what happened I am very heartbroken. I have a deep respect for Nick and his historical adventures. I have been a fan of American History and when I found Nick's videos I was impressed to see a young man take a big interest in it as well. My heart goes out to his family and his friends. Rest in peace Nick, you will be missed."

Nick, It feels like yesterday when we first hung out at Point Pleasant, having fun at the beach with our French exchange students. After that it was like we were going out to do fun activities. Ranging from a ropes course out in Pennsylvania to skiing all the way out in Colorado in the Rocky Mountains. However, my favorite period was spending the summers during the pandemic running trails and exploring cool places while getting in shape. We never missed a day where we weren't running together. We even ran fully sanctioned 5K events and running really good times. Your best race was Greystone Park with a 21:30 time finishing 2nd. Now the most difficult part that I have to face is running without you. You loss is not just losing a friend, neighbor or running buddy but that of a little brother. Your name Nicholas is one of Greek origin meaning Victory and if I were to describe who Nicholas Mathus was as a person, I would say "He's a man, I once knew, with a winning Spirit!" FERNANDA WAS THE LOVE OF MY SON'S SHORT LIFE. SHE SHARES MY PAIN
I got to know Fernanda, her mom and dad quite well since my son's passing. All three will visit me this summer.
My son was a lucky man. I now know why he loved Fernanda and her family so much. I saw nothing but LOVE when they visited me. I saw it in their eyes when they looked at each other and I know my son would want nothing more but for me to give his girlfriend the love and respect she deserves. Fernanda visits my son's grave often.
LOVE NEVER DIES

I've always known Nicholas to be an intelligent and talented young man. I remember him when he was young and playing games around the house with our sibling and diving in the pool during the summers. It's funny how Nick eventually became such a strong competitive swimmer winning many YMCA New Jersey state championships.
Our most recent rendezvous was at the Chit Chat Diner in Hackensack, NJ with his dad (my uncle) where we caught up and shared photos and stories. It was great to hear about all that he had accomplished at such a young age and how he was looking forward to his bright future. I am sure his spirit will continue to be with his close family and loved ones. Nicholas Glenn Mathus knows how deeply he is missed and loved. Zack Mathus |

A FATHERS STORY WITH NO PICTURES, JUST HIS VIVID MEMORY
THE WEEK OF JULY 9TH, 2022 NICK FLEW TO VISIT ME FOR THE LAST TIME. WE HAD THE BEST TIME INCLUDING A VICTORY IN GEORGIA. IT WAS AS IF SOMEONE KNEW THERE WOULD BE NO MORE VISITS FOR FATHER AND SON. THE ONE THING I WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER WAS ONE LATE AFTERNOON WE WERE IN MY POOL AND OUT OF THE BLUE MY SON SAID TO ME
"DAD LET ME GET ON YOUR BACK AND LET'S GO UNDERWATER LIKE I USED TO WHEN I WAS A KID".
SO WE DID, EVEN THOUGH NICK WAS NOW AN ADULT. I WAS PLEASNTLY SURPRISED AND HAPPY HE WANTED TO DO THAT AFTER SO MANY YEARS. THAT TOLD ME HE HAD FOND MEMORIES OF THOSE TIMES. I NOW REALIZE THAT THIS, LAST TIME, WAS THE 20TH ANNIVERSARY TO THE MONTH (I THINK) SINCE THE FIRST TIME WE DID IT WHEN NICK WAS ABOUT ONE YEAR OLD. MY FUTURE NATIONALLY CERTIFIED LIFE GUARD AND SCUBA DIVER WAS BORN TO BE A U.S. COAST GUARD RESCUE DIVER OR NAVAL OFFICER. HE WOULD HAVE BEEN A GREAT ASSET TO OUR ARMED FORCES. COVID KEPT HIM FROM THE COAST GUARD AND THE REST IS HISTORY.
MY SON CREATED MY LAST GREAT MEMORY WITH HIM UNTIL WE MEET AGAIN.
